Oven Baked BBQ Barbecue Tofu Easy Recipe
Since there has been such a wonderful response to my Baked Crispy Tofu Recipe and the Baked Teriyaki Tofu Recipe, I decided to share another of our family's favorites. This time around, we have BBQ Sweet and Sour Tofu, an easy and yummy dish.
One of the reasons I love working with tofu is that it is so versatile and soaks up almost anything that it is put in contact with, and this BBQ sauce blend will saturate the tofu squares and deliver a flavorful punch.
Much of the preparation is the same as with the teriyaki & breaded versions and is very easy to make.
**I usually double/triple this recipe and bake 2 or 3 blocks at one time, because it's so easy to make extras for leftovers while I'm at it.
BBQ Sweet and Sour Baked Tofu
- 1 block/16 oz. extra-firm tofu (drained & pressed)
- 3/4 cup barbeque sauce (any brand that you dig is great - if you are keeping it vegan, watch for honey in the ingredients)
- 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup orange juice (add to taste)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 Tablespoons molasses
- 4 Tablespoons soy sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- non-stick cooking spray

1. Remove tofu block from packaging and drain
2. Cut into thin slices (I do mine about 1/4" thick)
3. Press out the moisture from the tofu:
- for this part, I lay mine out on a large cutting board covered with paper towels. Atop the tofu, I place another layer of paper towels and lightly press down to release moisture. I take off that paper towel (as it is usually soaked after the first pressing) and put a new layer of PT down and place a baking sheet pan on top of that and something heavy atop the baking pan (coffee can, teapot, books, whatever you have handy) and let that stand for about 30-45 minutes while it releases more moisture. You can also wrap the tofu slices in a clean dish towel - either works well
4. Combine BBQ sauce, orange juice, brown sugar, olive oil, molasses and soy sauce in bowl. Whisk together until mixed well.
5. Add salt and pepper to taste.
6. Dip the tofu slices into the sauce mixture. I usually rub it in with my fingers so that it doesn't get too saturated and break apart, but soaks up enough that it contains that yummy flavor.
7. Lay out marinated slices on lightly oiled baking sheet

8.Bake at 375 degrees for 35-45 minutes (depending on how you like the texture: for a softer texture keep it near 35 minutes; for a little more crispy texture, cook longer).
Flip over half-way through.
