polemic (puh-lem-ik)- noun

The word polemic means " a controversial argument, especially one refuting or attacking a specific opinion or doctrine."

Was first used in the written form around 1630-1640. Comes from the Greek word polemikós, meaning "hostile," from polemis, meaning "war."
