A Whirlwind of a Weekend: Updates On The Move

Oh my, where did the days go? It seems like forever ago that I got to sit down and write here (I know it was only three days ago when I wrote about moving, but my brain is not jiving with the calendar, it seems).

It was a whirlwind of a weekend, beginning on Friday, as I loaded up my little Kia van with load-after-load of boxes, clothes, bedding, kitchenware, and anything that I could squeeze in and still get the doors to close. The kids helped me on Friday and Saturday morning as we made continuous trips from the old house (woah, that sounds nice to say) to the new house; and then when Steve would get off of work in the evenings, we would put larger pieces of furniture in his truck and continue the routine. Steve's co-worker Jesse, helped us on Saturday night with some of the heavier items (thanks, Jesse - you rock) and then on Sunday morning, we had movers come for just three hours to get the fridge, my stationary bike, the washer & dryer, and the other heavy goods.

You all know how moving goes, so I won't go into detail about the drudgery of the lifting, lugging, carrying, and unloading. But aside from all of the toilsome work, the reward is being in this beautiful new place and completely enjoying transforming it from an empty space into our home. The size accommodates us so well and it's like our belongings were just meant to be here, the way that they all fit into place.

Last night, Steve and I spent a few hours picking the best spots to hang our artwork and BAM!, it instantly popped color and pizzazz into place, and helped us to gather the ambiance that we dig. The internet is up and running, and our kitty cat is learning his way around his new abode. The kids are enjoying setting up their new rooms and have already gone for numerous swims in the pool. And I love the new kitchen and the way that the sunshine streams in on my desk area.

I have a lot left to do and oodles of work to catch up on from my wacky weekend, but wow, it feels great to be this far. We feel so fantastic about the choice we made to move here. I see great things ahead of us and a fresh start to synch it all into place. If I appear MIA, please bear with me...my normal routine should resume again soon and my brain should be back in gear shortly after that. I sure appreciate the heartwarming support, kind comments and messages I have been receiving. I am such a lucky girl.

Happy Monday to all!

Moving On: Memories, Minimizing and New Missions

This weekend, after five years in this house, our family is closing one chapter and opening a new one, when we move into our new townhouse. This excessively large home we are spending our final days in has served us well, but the 3,900 square feet no longer suits the goals and direction we have; and it is time to move on.

When we moved here back in 2005, after selling another home in the area, it seemed the perfect place. It was close to the kids' schools, sprawling and grand. But through the years (and especially during this last one), we have become more aware of how wasteful we were being; with rooms that we never used (or even stepped foot in), utility bills through the roof, and a LOT more house to keep clean than we ever bargained for.

True, we had good times here. We filmed Wife Swap here, we watched the kids move from elementary school, to middle school, to high school. We grew our business, changed our mindsets, found new purpose. But alas, the new home is just much more suitable for where we are now in life and with the goals we have set. It's only a few miles from where we currently reside and the kiddos will still go to the same schools, so not uprooting things in that sense. But it is nearly half the size. Yep, half. And knowing that feels really great!

In getting our family ready to fit into half the amount of space, we have been busy little bees doing major purging of all things unnecessary. With all three kids now teenagers, they were brilliant at playing the elimination game. They whittled down their belongings to what they really dig (meaning: computers, video games, musical instruments, clothes, books, and a few other odds & ends) and Steve and I did the same. We called a charity organization out three times to pick up huge loads of donations: furniture, clothes, shoes, household goods, toys, bikes, you name it - we gave it.

In the 18 years that Steve and I have been married, I seriously can't remember when our belongings were so in order. It's been quite a phenomenal experience and taught us so much about focusing on quality over quantity. Trying to take out the non-essentials in life to make room for more of what really matters: time together, sustainability, learning, health, sharing life, finding joy.

We certainly still have much to learn and we understand that this journey to simplicity is a life-long one. But figuring out this little piece of the puzzle has been a big stepping stone for us. We are very excited to start accumulating more happy memories and less material possessions.

Now, if I could just zap my stuff all into place at the new house and avoid the moving drudgery. Isn't there a Harry Potter spell for that?

Family Night of Anti-Flag, Anarchy, & Power to the Peaceful (video)

Since our kids were little, one of our favorite things to do as a family has been to see bands play. We took them to their very first show at the House of Blues about five years ago to see Less Than Jake, and on Sunday night, we headed back to the same HOB in Anaheim to catch the one-and-only Anti-Flag put on an inspiring and powerful show.

With Broadway Calls, Cancer Bats, and Aiden opening, it was a punk-filled night with an energetic audience, great sound, and magnificent vibes. We had an awesome spot over near the stage on the right-hand side of the venue so the kids could see well and we stood atop the few stairs there, so as not to get caught in the multitude of circle pits.

Anti-Flag has held a special place in my heart for many years, though this was the first time we had seen them play live (except for Brynn, who had caught their show at the Bamboozle festival a few years back). The positive atmosphere and essential messages that this band spreads ring so true to our ideologies and there is just nothing better than singing along to sentiments of anti-capitalism, anti-war, anti-fascism, resistance and revolution.

Unfortunately, Justin Sane was absent for the show, having just lost a loved one, he was on a plane traveling to the funeral and to be by his family's side; so bassist Chris #2 took over, leading the band with so much passion and emotion. It was an incredibly powerful night and we all enjoyed it tremendously.

Check out this video I shot, featuring the final song where A-F covers The Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go." A few particularly awesome moments:

  • 2:00 - Chris talks about how within these walls no racism, no sexism, no homophobia, no bigotry exists...
  • 4:11 - Drummer Pat Thetic jumps down into the crowd, as the crew lifts his drums down to him and the band plays "Power to the Peaceful"

Power to the Peaceful
Power to the Peaceful
Whoa-oh!
Power to the Peaceful
Power to the Peaceful
Whoa-oh!

This is not a war
of the urging people
This is not a war
of economic independance
It's a war for conquest
It's a war for military power
It's a war for money
The road to universal slaughter

Sons and daughters of a dream
The urge to struggle for an ideal
To stay and fight
Oppose war fever
Refuse to kill or be killed

There's voices calling in the wind
Power to the Peaceful
You know it's Power to the Peaceful.
