twitter (twit-er) - verb

Twitter means "to utter a succession of small, tremulous sounds, as a bird."

First used in the written form around 1325-1375. From the Middle English verb twiteren, which is akin to the German word zwitschern; and the Old High German word zwizziron. Twitter as a noun ("condition of tremulous excitement") is attested from 1678.

The word has been recently revitalized with the popularity of the website TwitterFollow me and I'll follow you.
