exegesis (ek-si-jee-sis) - noun

Exegesis is the "critical explanation or interpretation of a text or portion of a text, especially of the Bible."

First used in the written form around 1610-1620.  From the Greek word exēgēsis, from exegeisthai, meaning "explain, interpret," from ex- "out" + hegeisthai "to lead, guide."
