Word of the Day: April 12, 2009 ~ basket

basket (bas-kit) - noun

A basket is "a container made of twigs, rushes, thin strips of wood, or other flexible material woven together."

First used in the written form around 1250–1300; traced to the Middle English word basket(te)and early Romance baskauta.  Also used in the French dialect, bâchot orbachou, which meant a wooden or interwoven vessel.  Old High German's (ancestor of the modern literary German language) term, baskiza box, is another link to the early form of the word basket.
