August 24, 1932: On this day, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to make a transcontinental nonstop flight across the United States, when she landed at the Newark Airport in New Jersey after a 19 hour flight from Los Angeles, California; establishing a women's record of 19 hours and 5 minutes and setting a women's distance record of 2,447 miles.
